Late report - July 2007
Just found these pictures from a job in 2007. We were trenching on a customer's property when there was a lot of banging - the trencher had hit something. We stopped, cleared away the dirt and began to wonder what we had found. It looked very high tech with black glass, etc. and was in a spot where there could be an electricla connection, though if so it should have been much deeper. Then somebody said "That looks like a microwave oven"...

The customer just said "From other things I've found on this property, this doesn't actually surprise me"

Top picture is the now door-less microwave still in the ground, bottom picture is the door, etc. Note that the glass dish was still in there.

Contaminated fuel - August 2011
Miraculously this chainsaw actually ran, but we could not tune it. Then we noticed some moisture around the carburettor. When we emptied the fuel out this is what we got...

Water in fuel, contaminated fuel

Old Homelite Chainsaw - May 2011
An old Homelite XL Auto chainsaw, probably from the 1980s, that came in for a new chain.
Unfortunately the sprocket was badly worn so we had to source a new one, not always easy for a 30 year old machine.
Fortunately that came off the shelf from our regular supplier.
Unfortunately there are several XL Auto models and this is a very early one with a small diameter crankshaft so the sprocket did not fit.
Finally we found a bush that adapts early models to late sprockets, and the customer will get a few more years of service from his machine.

Ants and electricity - May 2011
A customer called to report that his bore control had stopped working. We brought it back to the shop, opened it up to find clear signs of burnt circuitry and a few dozen fried ants. Ants secrete formic acid which over time corrodes circuit boards and creates short circuits. Replacement is the only option in this case, perhaps with periodic application of ant dust around the unit.

Balingup 2011
Our stand at Balingup Field Day went well. The chainsaw saw-horses attracted a lot of attention and sold well, we sold a few items such as blowers and hedge trimmers, and introduced ouselves to lots of potential customers.

The picture shows part of our stand while we were still setting up.

Waterwise?
While performing repairs we found low pressure in one area. After following the bubbling noises, under a rose bush we discovered this "repair". Kitchen cling wrap wrapped around the break, secured with packing tape.

Bridgetown Agricultural Show - November 2010
A good day, not too hot, a lower than usual turnout, but plenty of interest at our stand over the day.

Bridgetown Show - November 2008
In 2007 we roasted on the Oval in intense heat. This year we got wet instead. No pictures this time. We had a good day, considering the weather, and the new show format worked well. We look forward to 2009's event.

Chainsaw adjuster problem - March 2008
A customer brought in a chainsaw for service, and probable new bar and chain. It definitely needed the new bar and chain, but when we installed them we could not adjust the chain tension, and the bar was not square to the chainsaw. After a closer look we discovered the adjuster pictured, all bitter and twisted. As the adjuster was turned it pushed the side of the bar in and out. Unless the nuts were very loose you couldn't turn the adjuster. We don't know how it got so bent, but as it twisted the bar relative to the chain drive it probably contributed to the sad state of the bar. A new adjuster fixed things nicely.

What happens if a pump works against a closed head... - February 2008
This piece of 2" rural pipe came off a pump that had been unable to raise enough pressure to trigger the pressure switch and thus turn itself off (due to air leaks on the input). When that happens, the water stands still in the pump and becomes extremely hot. In this case that heat softened the pipe which burst (even though the pressure wasn't high enough to trigger the switch, it was still very high).

My pump keeps losing its prime...
I wonder why?

Echo chainsaws - long life and reliability - December 2007
This chainsaw was brought in by a customer for a new chain. Its an Echo Little Champ top handle saw, and at least 20 years old. The owner says it has been completely reliable, and has never missed a beat. What is very noticeable is how much lighter the current equivalent Echo chainsaw is in comparison, useful in a saw intended for one handed operation.

The Bridgetown Show - November 24th 2007
The Right Stuff had a stand at the annual Bridgetown Show on November 24th. An extremely hot, but otherwise enjoyable, day.
