When purchasing
a ride-on mower a number of factors must be taken into account, including:
- how large an area will you be mowing? Larger mowers are more time-effective
on large properties, smaller ride-ons can be pushed beyond their designed
duty cycle if asked to mow a too large area.
- is it lawn or a grassy paddock? Some ride-ons are more suited to a
lawn environment - their deck is not designed for the uneven terrain
of a typical paddock.
- what sort of grass? Some of the domestic grasses grow to be extremely
lush and thick even without much watering. A high powered motor is required
to cut them.
- do you need to catch the grass clippings? Usually only a question applicable
to lawns rather than paddocks. For some kinds of grass the clippings
need to be removed to reduce the build-up of thatch and a catcher is
essential. For other grasses the options are to leave the clippings where
they are thrown, or to use a mulching blade and adaptor to finely chop
the clippings and drop them back on to the grass.
- how wide are the gateways between areas to be mown? No point having
a 107cm (42") wide deck if you have 90cm gates between the areas to be
mown.
- will you be mowing around and in and out of trees? If you will need
repeatedly to go in between trees and reverse out again a hydro transmission
(i.e. an automatic) will be a lot easier to use. If most of your mowing
will be up and down open spaces, then a manual or hydro transmission
will serve.
- does the area to be mown and the expected frequency of mowing warrant
a ride-on with a commercial specification? A pressed steel deck will
meet most domestic and small landholder needs, but for commercial use
a heavier gauge deck or a fabricated deck will give longer life and lower
maintenance and repair.
At The Right Stuff we offer ride-ons from the world's best manufacturers.
All build their product in their own factories, they are not a generic
product dressed up with colour and badge. Contact
